6061-T6 Aluminum for Forged Wheels
BE FORGED identifies aerospace-grade 6061-T6 aluminum in its forged-wheel manufacturing information. Understanding the material designation helps you ask better questions about the wheel that will actually be built.
An alloy and a temper
6061 identifies an aluminum alloy family whose principal alloying additions include magnesium and silicon. T6 identifies a heat-treated material condition: solution heat treatment followed by artificial aging. These two parts of the name describe different things. Neither is a wheel diameter, a manufacturing tolerance or an independently certified load capacity.
“Aerospace-grade” describes the material positioning used by BE FORGED. It should not be read as proof that a finished wheel carries an aviation approval. When reviewing a wheel, distinguish the alloy specification from documentation for the complete product.
The material is one part of the engineering
Spoke architecture, mounting-pad geometry, barrel dimensions, machining and the selected fitment influence the finished wheel. A material name cannot tell you whether a particular face profile clears a large brake caliper or whether a configuration is appropriate for a heavily loaded vehicle.
That is why the application-specific design conversation includes the vehicle, intended use and modifications. The load-rating guide explains the difference between choosing an alloy and confirming wheel capacity.
Choose construction and finish deliberately
Compare BE1 Monoblock designs with BE2 Multi-Piece designs using the construction guide. A monoblock’s single-piece face and barrel and a multi-piece wheel’s assembled components create different design possibilities. Discuss the intended configuration rather than assuming one material designation settles that choice.
A brushed or polished appearance describes the surface finish, not a different alloy. Use the finish guide to separate color, texture, coating and hardware choices from structural specifications.
What to request with a build quote
Include the wheel model, front and rear dimensions under consideration, tire choice, brake package and use case. Ask the team to confirm the selected material and construction, the configuration’s load capability and the applicable documentation. Published catalog ranges are a starting point, not a statement that every possible width and offset is available for every vehicle.

6061-T6 material properties in numbers
Kaiser Aluminum’s 6061 sheet, coil and plate technical data lists the following typical reference properties for T6/T651 material. They describe that supplier’s material data, not measured BE FORGED wheel performance or guaranteed values for a wheel forging.
| Property | Reference value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Ultimate tensile strength | 310 MPa / 45 ksi | Maximum tensile stress in the reference test |
| Tensile yield strength | 276 MPa / 40 ksi | Reference stress associated with yielding |
| Elastic modulus | 68.3 GPa | Material stiffness; wheel geometry determines structural deflection |
| Nominal density | 2.70 g/cm³ | Mass per unit volume of aluminum |
One ksi is 1,000 psi; one MPa is one newton per square millimeter. Tensile stress is not a wheel load rating. Material condition, product form, section thickness, processing and test direction matter when applying a material property. The finished wheel still needs its own geometry and capacity review.
